Dear Day School Community-

MCAS TESTING…..The 2017 MCAS testing is completed the exception of a few make-up tests.  Students displayed excellent focus and effort as they completed either the computer-based or paper-based testing.  Staff administered the assessments deviating from their typical daily schedule and demonstrated adaptability with when their specialists and enrichment classes would be conducted.  Teacher Assistants, as well as Math & Reading Interventionists, Guidance Counselor and Literacy Specialist were extremely helpful with proctoring individual, small group and make-up testing sessions.  Iím very pleased the testing went so very well.  A salute to Assistant Principal Chris Sardella and to Digital Learning Specialist Marianne Butterline for the many contributions they made to this standardized testing mandate and successful administration.  Student results will be mailed to families in the fall 2017.

TEACHER LUNCHEON…..What a terrific Teacher Appreciation Luncheon our teachers and staff had on Wednesday 5/17/17!  Day School parents Gina Mach, Betsy Metters and Julie Pepinís effort, along with the many donations of paper goods, soft drinks and desserts were fabulous; made this event very special.  Between the delicious food, festive decorations (balloons, center pieces, etc.), student developed “Kindness Tree” and a free drawing for prizes; this event was wonderful and greatly appreciated!
SAFETY DRILL…..the ALICE drill held on the morning of Friday 5/19/17 was highly successful.  After hearing over the intercom where an intruder (simulated situation) was located in our school, students and staff responded by either barricading in their classroom or evacuating from the school.  It was our third and final safety drill with the purpose of preparing our students and staff to respond if there is a situation that involves an intruder.
FIELD DAY…..Weather permitting our school will conduct its annual Field Day tomorrow.  I will send an email to all families and staff about 6:45 AM confirming whether the event will be held or not.  The weather is forecasted to be clear and 60 degrees at 9:00 AM, as well as clear and 70 degrees at 1:00 PM.  Please have your child bring a water bottle labeled with their name.  In case your child doesnít have a water bottle or forgets it at home we will have disposable cups available.  At one of the stations a freeze pop will be made available to all students.  These freeze pops are a brand called Fla-Vor-Ice.  You can google the ingredients for this product.  Kindly send an alternative snack to school for your child if concerned about a possible allergy to an ingredient in the popsicle.
MEMORIAL DAY PROGRAM…..Thursday 5/25/17 is our annual Memorial Day Program.  Weather permitting the program will be held outdoors at 9:15 AM.  All Day School families and relatives are invited to attend this outdoor event.  If you need to sit during the program I suggest you bring a chair with you.  Iíll make a decision about 6:45 AM whether to have the program outdoors or indoors.  If the program must be conducted indoors only students and staff will be permitted due to our limited seating capacity in the Gymnasium.  Please have your child wear the following color scheme to school for this program:Grade three students- wear red (top)Grade four students- wear white (top)Grade five students- wear blue (top)One of the highlights of the program will be the distribution of the Nick Colgan Memorial Award.

TICKS…..I've received inquiries regarding ticks on students after they've been outdoors at our school.  The incidence of ticks is exploding this year due to many factors.  The best way to keep yourself safe is to practice prevention:
A) Perform frequent, thorough tick checks each day, especially the hairline, waistline, and under arms
B) Wear light colored clothing
C) Tuck pants in socks if hiking or doing yard work
D) Refer to the CDC website for additional details at:
To transmit a disease, a tick needs to be a carrier of disease itself and attached for 24-72 hours.  For tick removal:
A) Do not burn or use any substance on the tick
B) Do not grasp, squeeze or twist the body of the tick
C) Grasp tick close to the skin with tweezers
D) Pull tick straight out
E) Use antiseptic on skin
F) Wash your hands
Contact your health care provider for further instructions.  On Friday 5/19/17 the Westford Public Schools Maintenance Department sprayed cedar oil on the recess grounds with the hope of eliminating ticks and flys.
