6/20/17 Day School news
Dear Day School Community-

SCHOOL SCHEDULE.....A reminder that Wednesday 6/21/17 is the last day of school for the 2016-2017 school year.  It is also an early release day throughout the Westford Public Schools.  Day School students will be dismissed at 11:40 AM.  The after-school program (Westford Partnership for Children) has concluded for this school year.

17-18 STUDENT ASSIGNMENTS......Today all Day students in grades three and four met and visited their 2017-2018 teacher.  Thus classmates were also present during this orientation.  Students were provided with two letters.  One of the letters indicates the name of the teacher your child will be assigned to.  A second letter is a "Welcome Back" message for the teacher.  If students were absent today we'll mail this letter to your home address in the next few days.

PROGRESS REPORTS......The final trimester standards-based report card will be posted on the parent portal at approximately 4:00 PM.

GRADES FIVE TO SIX SUMMER READING......

Dear future sixth graders and parents/guardians,

You will find a link to the 6th grade summer reading list here.  Please choose one title from this list and read it over the summer.  When you return to school in the fall, you will complete an assignment in your Language Arts class about your book.

Thank you,
Janet Keirstead

CURRENT GRADE THREE FAMILIES.....If you did not submit a copy of your child's physical and immunizations to the School Nurse during your child's grade three school year, please forward a copy as soon as possible.  Massachusetts State Law requires a copy be on file in the clinic for grades K, 3, 7 and 11, as well as any student new to the Westford Public Schools.  You can send it to my attention during the summer months.
Thank you,
Cheryl Carpenter, Day School Nurse

SPECIAL OLYMPICS UPDATE.....We are excited to announce our school community raised $1,415.50 for the Special Olympics Foundation!  This money will be contributed to the Massachusetts Chapter to support program activities including supporting local training and competition, developing education materials for volunteer coaches, outreach to recruit more athletes, family support, and much more.  Thanks to the generosity of our Day School families, more people with intellectual disabilities have a chance to participate and experience the transformative powers of sports.

Team results for each class are listed below.  These results are also posted in the school Cafeteria.  Classes were awarded points depending on their place in each event.  Ten points was given to first place finishers, five points for second place, and three points for third place.  Overall class medals were awarded to teams with the most points.  Here are the results:

Thank you to all of the students for demonstrating excellent sportsmanship and living by the Special Olympics oath: "Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt."  We appreciate the efforts of the Day School Student Senate for choosing to support and researching such an important and worthy organization.  Thank you very much to all the parent volunteers and Erin Claycomb for organizing the games and coordinating the event!  A special salute to Assistant Principal Chris Sardella for leading the Student Senate as well as facilitate the work to select this organization, plus design our grade level Special Olympics activities.

SUPPORTING WESTFORD MUSIC PROGRAMS

Dear WPS Music families:

We are privileged to live in a town with gifted music educators, and supportive administration, parents, and community members who all work together to create a strong music program in our public schools.  Indeed, Westford has been recognized for the fourth year running with a prestigious award given by the NAMM Foundation as one of the nation's “Best Communities for Music Education”.

FAME (Friends Advancing Music Education) is a nonprofit, parent volunteer organization that has been supporting WPS music since 1983.  We strive to enrich classroom learning in general music, band, orchestra, and chorus at all grade levels, meeting needs that extend beyond the regular school music budget.  FAME has provided assistance for such things as sheet music, equipment, busing expenses, uniforms, master class workshops, music-related student community service projects, and more.  Each year FAME also awards senior and summer music camp scholarships. Our fundraising efforts can help defray costs that may make the difference in some families' ability to participate in music programs.  We believe wholeheartedly in the benefits of music education to every student's overall performance and success!

Each year, FAME holds the fall Music Cafe, spring Dinner Dance, as well as bake sales and raffles.  This year FAME was able to meet and exceed its fundraising goals, offering over $8,000 for scholarships and music teacher requests.  A new benefit concert, Chick Singer Night--produced by Marcia Macres and Jennifer Truesdale and featuring Westford music students--donated its proceeds of $1000 to FAME!  We would like to offer a huge THANK YOU to our many contributors and volunteers who support us in our mission.  We also greatly appreciate the support of our generous community business sponsors.  A special shout-out goes to Red Hat for their sponsorship of the Dinner Dance.

Experiencing a transition in leadership and being very short on parent volunteers, we were almost unable to do the Dinner Dance this year.  In order for FAME to continue, we need your ideas--and your help putting them into action! Volunteering for FAME is a great way to connect with your child's music program and meet other music families.  In addition to openings on the board, there are many other ways, large or small, you can contribute your time and talent. Come to one of our meetings or contact us:

Please complete our short  (5 minutes) FAME Survey by 6/30/2017.  We value your feedback and look forward to your suggestions and ideas!

Thank you, and have a wonderful summer break with your families ……. Relax and enjoy the music!
