Dear Parents,

We are so excited to share with you our fall school reading event: One School, One Book.  This year, over the course of a month, every family and staff at Day School will read the same book at home. At school we will have trivia contests, prizes and fun activities to bring a sense of community between home and school.  Teachers have secretly voted for one of three book choices and the winning book will be announced during our “big reveal” at school.  Your donation of $10 will enable every family to participate and support our school wide activities.  We look forward to sharing this memorable experience with you and your family!

Happy Reading,

Alison Bates, Literacy Specialist
Norman E. Day Elementary School

Please print attached form if you have not already confirmed your childís participation in this program. We canít wait to unveil our book!

Safe Routes to School
The Westford Public Schools is partnering with the Department of Transportation to provide pedestrian and bicycle programs for elementary students. The Safe Routes to School Program educates children and adults on the importance of walking and biking to school safely. Through a combination of pedestrian and bicycle safety education sessions, school safety assemblies and workshops, students are given the tools they need to be smart and safe pedestrians and bicyclists. The program teaches children and parents about the broad range of transportation choices:
  • Demonstrates important lifelong bicycling and walking safety skills
  • Creates awareness among drivers in the vicinity of the schools
  • Improves the health benefits of our children through regular exercise
  • Advances the physical health, environmental health and safety of our children and our communities
The Day School will offer two programs for students in grades 3-5.

  • Grade 3 students will participate in the Pedestrian Safety Program on Tuesday, October 24. We need three third grade parents from each class to volunteer. Please contact your childís teacher to participate.
  • Grades 4 and 5 students will participate in the Bicycle Safety Program on Wednesday, October 25.
Habitat for Humanity Fundraiser
The Day School is partnering with Habitat for Humanity to build a home for families in need right here in Westford. We will be collecting spare change throughout the month of October to support these families. The top classroom collectors will have the opportunity to sign a 2x4 board used in the construction of the homes. Students in the top classroom will be chosen by lottery to participate in the home dedication. Get rid of all of that spare change and make a difference in someone's life!

CORI/Fingerprinting
Parents are reminded that in order to volunteer at the Day School, you need to submit a CORI application.  The application is available in the office and MUST be submitted in person with a current photo ID.   The CORI process is required yearly and once you've applied at one school, you can volunteer in any of the Westford Public Schools.  To volunteer for field trips and any off premises event, all volunteers MUST be fingerprinted.  You can find a link on the Day School website with all the information for the fingerprinting process.  Thank you for volunteering at Day School!

Vehicle ID Cards
Parents are reminded if you pick up your child at the end of the day in the vehicle ID line, it is required that you fill out a "vehicle identification card" form located on the Day School website under the "forms" tab, and return it to school for processing and cards will be issued.  Please note that new cards are issued each year for students therefore you must fill out a new form at the beginning of each school year if you are picking up your child.  Thank you for your cooperation with this process.
