Weekly Update

Dear Parents,
Safety during bus arrival and dismissal is critically important. On Friday afternoon, a car collided with an empty bus in the main circle in front of the school building and then drove away from the scene of the accident. It was a minor accident and the bus driver was able to proceed with her normal route without any safety concerns. All students rode the bus safely and were delivered to their homes in a timely manner.

Regardless of the scale of the accident, I am very concerned about vehicle traffic when busses are loading and unloading children. During bus arrival (8:15AM-8:30AM) and bus departure (2:30PM-2:45PM), vehicle traffic is prohibited from traveling around the main traffic circle and passing parked busses. If vehicles pass parked busses while they are queued for arrival or dismissal, I will instruct the staff to record license plates and notify the Westford police department.

Anyone who is picking up students without a vehicle ID placard must park their car in the designated parking spaces and then sign their children out of school properly in the main office.

Please know these rules are in place so that I can ensure every child is safe.

Sincerely,

Chris Louis Sardella, Principal

School Bus Safety Week
In honor of bus safety week, I decided to ride the bus. I had the pleasure of riding bus #27 from Day School on Wednesday, October 18th. I was so impressed with the positive bus behavior I observed. Students were seated appropriately throughout the ride, polite to each other while boarding and exiting the bus, and appeared happy while reading, socializing or just enjoying the beautiful fall sights out the window. I was not only impressed with the students on bus #27, but also with the bus driver, Joanne. She greeted every student by name as they boarded the bus and wished each child a great day as they exited the bus. She was aware of special circumstances surrounding who might be meeting a child at the bus stop and was sure to communicate with the child to ensure safety. This is just one more example of why I am so proud to be a part of the Westford Public Schools community. We have great kids!!!

Volunteers Needed!
For parents who would like to volunteer to help with the Miller/Day Halloween Party coming up on October 28th, we have a sign up genius link to make it super easy!  Some jobs require a simple poster or design (tic-tac-toe), and some jobs are 30 min. of supervising the hallways or the party rooms during the event. Easy and FUN!! Thank you!!

Habitat for Humanity Fundraiser
The Day School is partnering with Habitat for Humanity to build a home for families in need right here in Westford. We will be collecting spare change throughout the month of October to support these families. The top classroom collectors will have the opportunity to sign a 2x4 board used in the construction of the homes. Students in the top classroom will be chosen by lottery to participate in the home dedication. Get rid of all of that spare change and make a difference in someone's life!
