We are excited to welcome Liz Van Saun with Kast Hill Studio as the artist in residence for a week in January. Under Liz’s direction, the Day School will create a community mosaic project with the help of the entire student body, faculty, and staff. Liz will offer a one day “Interactive Gallery” before the residency at which time she will talk about the history of mosaics, show samples of ancient and contemporary mosaics, discuss the school project, answer questions, and have the students and other participants see and handle the materials and tools.
Students will have a strong voice in the process every step of the way from initial concept, to final artwork and completion of the mosaics. Day School art teachers Pam Perron and Natasha Evans will help the students design the mosaic panels during their realistic art unit. Our plan is to create six mosaic panels featuring the native flora and fauna of Westford. The student drawings will then be incorporated into the overall design for each of the panels.
Students, faculty, and staff will then use recycled stained glass pieces, mirror pieces, gems, and other miscellaneous tiles to complete the mosaics. The students will learn about “green” art through the use of recycled materials.
The finished panels will be grouted and installed in the Day School cafeteria. The finished project will be six 3ft x 4ft panels featuring the native wildlife of Westford. We will have an unveiling ceremony to celebrate the achievements of the whole school community.
The entire cost of the project is $5,237. We have received a grant from the Westford Education Foundation and hope to get additional funding from the Westford Cultural Council. The remaining funds will come the proceeds from Square One Art purchases. To order keepsakes and gifts to support our artist in residence program, see instructions below.

The 2017-2018 Day School Ski & Snowboard Club meets for six consecutive Thursdays in January and February at Nashoba Valley Ski Area on Powers Road in Westford (transportation provided). Experienced skiers and snowboarders of all levels are welcome to participate. Ski and snowboard lessons for all experienced levels are available if desired, and take place during the second hour of each Ski Club session.
* * * IMPORTANT: This is not an activity for beginner skiers/snowboarders! * * * Student participants must be able to be independent on the slopes. They should be able to ride lifts confidently with a buddy, and be responsible for getting to their lesson (if applicable) and back to the pickup area at the end of the day.
While Ski Club is a chaperoned activity, chaperones are there to monitor and ensure the safety of all students across Nashoba’s 17 trails. They cannot dedicate themselves to a student who needs continuous assistance. Also, If you don’t have a buddy you’re planning to ski/snowboard with, you will be placed with another child or group of similar ability. We encourage kids to find buddies on their own as it’s more fun to be with a friend!
Go to http://dayskiclub.edublogs.org to find extensive information related to Ski Club, including dates, ticket and equipment information, rental information, and a typical schedule of a ski club day.
Finally, the number of participants in Ski/Snowboard Club must be limited to 100 students. If you are interested in having your child participate in the Day School Ski/Snowboard Club, please complete online registration and permission form and return payments to school with all associated fees for Nashoba Valley no later than Wednesday, November 8, 2017.
If you have any questions regarding the Day School Ski and Snowboard Club, please contact the Ski/Snowboard Club coordinators listed below:
