Weekly Update January 19
Weekly Update
Friday, January 19, 2018

Dear Parents,

Safety during arrival and dismissal times is extremely important in the school parking lot. Please pay attention to the posted signs. Vehicle traffic should not be using the traffic circle during bus arrival (8:15AM-8:30AM) and dismissal times (2:30PM-2:45PM). Bus drivers have been asked to use their flashing lights and stop signs when students are disembarking or boarding buses at the platform. According to Massachusetts state law, cars are prohibited from passing buses with flashing lights. Please keep in mind the traffic circle is one way only. Vehicle traffic may not attempt to travel around the circle in the opposite direction to avoid passing the busses at the platform.

I am sending out this reminder because I have personally witnessed violations of all of the safety regulations listed above. Because I am concerned about the safety of students, I will be closely monitoring the arrival and dismissal times over the next few weeks. I know all of you join me in our goal to keep Day School students safe. Thanks for your attention to this important matter.

Sincerely,

Chris Louis Sardella, Principal

Important Information about the Flu from the School Nurse

As you can tell from tuning in to recent news reports, we are in the midst of widespread flu activity in Massachusetts and the entire US.  Flu season typically runs October to May, peaking December through February. A person is capable of spreading the flu a day before symptoms appear and up to 5-7 days after. Fortunately, there are many common practices that can offer protection from the flu and other illnesses:

  • Get vaccinated - your body will need 2 weeks time to ramp up a full response to the flu vaccine and it's still not too late
  • Wash your hands
  • Cough/sneeze into your elbow
  • Stay home if sick
The Day School staff is asking for you to partner with us to help reinforce these measures at home so they become healthy habits.  Please download this PDF for further information: Everyday Preventive Actions That Can Help Fight Germs, Like Flu

Artist in Residence Week
We are thrilled to welcome Lizz Van Saun as our artist in residence at the Day School beginning Monday, January 22!

Day School Art Teachers Pam Perron and Natasha Evans have been working with students to prepare for the residency. In December, art classes have been learning about tile mosaics by working with cut and torn paper. To prepare for our community mosaic project, each student has created sketches of local plants and animals in Westford. In her New Hampshire studio, Lizz Van~Saun used these sketches to create the templates for the mosaic panels representing Westford landmarks:

  • Abbot Mill and Forge Pond
  • Historic Buildings: J.V. Fletcher Library, Westford Museum, Town Hall
  • Fletcher Quarry
  • Reed Brook
  • Stone Arch Bridge
  • Nashoba Mountain
We still need more volunteers to make this enrichment activity a success for all students. Please visit our sign-up genius to volunteer for this program: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0e4ca5a62ba6fc1-artist
We need an adult to help supervise and participate in the creative process for each of the six panels. Please consider volunteering so we can fill all of the sessions. Thanks for your help!
