I am so grateful for the generous donations of the Miller and Day School communities that have helped us reach our goal for the Day School playground. I hope you will be able to attend the Westford Annual Town Meeting on Saturday, March 24th at 10AM in the Abbot School gymnasium. We need your support for warrant article 13 that contains the recommended funds from the Community Preservation Act.
Here is a breakdown of our fundraising and donations for our playground project:
- Grants, donations, and fundraising: $54,946.18
- Summer Village Gift funds: $30,000
- Recommended funds from the Community Preservation Act: $110,000
If the residents of Westford vote for the recommended funds from the Community Preservation Act, we will have enough money to fund our playground project. I hope to see you at Town Meeting on Saturday morning at the Abbot School. Thanks so much for your generous support! Day School students are really looking forward to our new playground.

Math Information Night for Grade 4 Parents
This year we will hold a separate Math Information Night for parents and guardians of current grade 4 children. It is with much excitement that we will introduce a new format for grade 5 mathematics instruction! Rather than place students in Standard or Accelerated classes, the needs of all learners will be met in heterogeneous classrooms using differentiated small group instruction. This format was piloted successfully at Abbot this year. During the Information Night we will share the results of the Abbot pilot as well as the ways we have prepared the other elementary schools for this transition.
Please join us on Wednesday, March 28, 2018 from 6:30 - 7:30 PM in the Crisafulli School Cafeteria to learn more about what grade 5 math will look like next year. Please note the new date, time, and location for this event.
If you are unable to join us, our presentation will be available on the District webpage after the meeting.
Fifth Grade Human Growth and Development Unit
In the upcoming weeks all fifth graders will be starting a Human Growth and Development Unit. The goal of this unit is to help students recognize the beginning stages of puberty and to explain why and how their bodies are changing. We will address some common questions students have such as:
- What does puberty mean?
- What causes it?
- What is adolescence?
Permission from a Parent/Guardian is necessary for your son/daughter to participate in the Human Growth and Development Unit. During these lessons there will be separate instruction for girls and boys. There will be information given on the reproduction system, emotional maturity and healthy decision-making regarding nutrition and hygiene. The videos: Just Around the Corner for Boys and Just Around the Corner for Girls (Marsh Media) will be viewed. The Wellness Teacher at each building will be presenting the material.
We understand this can be a challenging topic for both parents and students to discuss. It is our hope that this lesson will provide an opportunity for continued discussion of this subject at home.
Please sign and return the form in your child's backpack by Friday, March 30th, 2018.
An informational evening for all parents/guardians of 5th grade students has

Donate Your Used Shoes to Benefit Our Schools!
Miller and Day Schools are both collecting gently-used, wearable pairs of shoes this year for a fundraising program called ShoeBox Recycling. Donated shoes are shipped around the world for resale and reuse. Our schools earn $20 for each filled box of shoes! This money goes directly toward funding our many activities, including arts and education programs. We are also partnering with The Mary's Community Thrift Store to increase our schools' profits.
Shoes must be in wearable condition, without holes in the soles, cannot be wet or mildewed, and must have shoelaces if they are necessary for the shoe to function.
Types of shoes ACCEPTED: Almost all types of gently used shoes including adult and children's casual shoes, dress shoes, athletic shoes, boots, work boots, and sandals.~
Types of shoes NOT ACCEPTED: Shoes in need of repair, wet or mildewed shoes, heavy winter boots, ski boots, roller skates, rollerblades, ice skates, flip flops, Crocs and bedroom slippers.
To help, please drop off gently-used, wearable shoes in the lobby of the Miller and Day Schools. And thanks!
