Kevin Regan

Dear Parents/Guardians:

Welcome to our school community!  Constructed in 1965 as a middle school our facility houses students in grades three through five.  An elementary school since 1992, our current 405 students participate in an academically based and socially focused curriculum matched to the state Curriculum Frameworks and Westford Curriculum Benchmarks.  The Day School was the initial school in the district to have a Code of Conduct.  Recently we created a Vision Statement, as well as updated our Core Values, Mission Statement, and Code of Conduct.  The Core Values of respect, responsibility, communication, and participation are the foundation of our comprehensive program.

Our school slogan "Gateway To An Expanding World Of Growth And Knowledge" highlights the high expectations and forward thinking of our staff.  Students participate in the newly adopted Everyday Math Program.  Children in grade five participate in either standard or accelerated Math programs.  Students participate in mixed ability classrooms for instruction in reading, language arts, math, science and Social studies.  Another change for 2007-2008 is the piloting of health being taught by our physical education teachers.  This wellness approach integrates concepts taught for better student understanding.

Our high achieving school is unique.  While promoting high student achievement and academic progress of all students we offer extended day opportunities as follows: Grade Five Chorus, Title One Math F.U.N. (Fun Understanding Numbers) Program, Student Senate, Math Clubs in each of three grade levels, Morning Math (support from Math Resource Facilitators), Early Arrival Option (before school day care), Grade Five Play (production to be determined), Grades four and five student Book Club, Westford Partnership for Children (after school program), and Newspaper Club.  Planning is taking place to implement a Chess Club and Science Club.  Discussion has taken place about a foreign language club, as well as Geography Olympiad.  Special features of our school include: S.T.A.R.S. (Striving To Achieve Respect in our School) certificates, New Student Orientation, Cobra Council (monthly school-wide assembly), strings and instrumental program, Curriculum Night for parents, Inventors and Scientists Fayre, School Store Grade Five Environmental Camp, school-wide Field Day, Safety Patrol, Grade Three and Grade Four Family Math & Science Nights, student writing contests, and Grade Five Completion Ceremony.  The 2007-2008 school year brings the addition of a school yearbook and grade level Movie Nights.  Our school is quite fortunate to have many PTO site-based coordinators dedicated to supporting our school programs and staff.  Parent and community volunteers are certainly welcome to partner with our students and professional staff!

The 2007-2008 School Improvement Plan contains many goals.  These aspirations include: coordinating professional development opportunities, improving student achievement in Math, enhancing student achievement through the use of technology, integrating teaching of health and wellness, provide parent information sessions, enhance home/school communication, seek high student achievement and academic progress, promote extended day co-curricular activities, support student transition, and maintain a safe and healthy school environment.

Do you have the capacity and enthusiasm to join our professional learning community?  If so, please review the information at:http://westfordk12.us/Pages/hrm/jobs/index  This will initiate your application process.
