Message from the Day School Principal
Welcome to our professional learning community! Constructed in 1965 as a middle school our school nurtures students in grades three through five. An elementary school since 1992, our current 420 students engage in an academically based and socially responsible curriculum matched to the state Curriculum Frameworks and Westford Curriculum Benchmarks. The Day School was the initial school in our district to implement a Code of Conduct. Our Vision Statement, Core Values, Mission Statement, and Code of Conduct serve as platforms of consistency and excellence. The Core Values of respect, responsibility, communication, and participation are the pillars of our comprehensive program.
Our school slogan "Gateway To An Expanding World Of Growth And Knowledge" highlights the high expectations and forward thinking of our staff. Students participate in a developmentally appropriate curriculum focused on balanced literacy and numeracy. Children in grade five participate in either standard or accelerated Math programs. Students in all three grade levels engage in mixed ability classrooms for instruction in reading, language arts, Math, science, and social studies. Our physical education teacher instructs concepts of physical fitness and well-being. This approaches emphasizes the dual importance of a healthy mind and body. Children also participate in weekly learning opportunities in art, general music, and library sciences. The Enrichment Block provides instruction in
social curriculum, technology, and Wellness utilizing a three week rotating schedule. Students in grades three through five have the option to participate in the Strings Program. Children in grade five can participate in the Band instrument program. Each of these two Music programs is fee-based.
Our high achieving school is unique. While promoting high student achievement and academic progress of all students we offer extended day opportunities as follows: Grade Five Chorus, Title One Reading R.I.S.E (Reading Involvement for Successful Education) Program, Student Senate, Math Clubs in each of three grade levels, Morning Math (support from Math Resource Facilitators), Early Arrival Option (before school day care), Grade Five Play (2012-2013 production will be Bebop with Aesop), Grades four and five student Book Club, Westford Partnership for Children (after school program), Chess Club, Ski Club, and Newspaper Club. Other special features of our school include: S.T.A.R.S. (Striving To Achieve Respect in our School) certificates, New Student Orientation, Cobra Council (monthly school-wide assembly), strings and
